Wide receiver Deebo Samuel has re-signed with the San Francisco 49ers on a one-year deal. The agreement is valued at up to seven million dollars, with the exact amount likely depending on performance and roster decisions. Samuel, who is thirty years old, had been waiting for a suitable opportunity after receiving less than ideal offers in free agency. He found that opportunity in returning to coach Kyle Shanahan’s team, where he previously thrived as a key player. Although Samuel’s efficiency had declined before his trade to the Washington Commanders, expectations are high that he will improve under Shanahan’s leadership.
His return comes at a time when the 49ers are dealing with uncertainty in their receiving corps. Former first-round pick Ricky Pearsall is sidelined due to a knee injury, and Christian Kirk has been out with a calf issue. Samuel spent six seasons with the 49ers before being traded to Washington last year. He was a standout player during his time with the team, reaching his peak in 2021 when he earned first-team All-Pro honors. Samuel’s performance that season included 1,770 yards from scrimmage and fourteen touchdowns. He had been given permission to request a trade last year after the team decided to move in a different direction. After being released, Samuel chose to rejoin an offense he was familiar with and where he could potentially see more playing time.
The 49ers’ current receiver situation leaves openings that Samuel might fill, especially if Pearsall and Kirk miss time. Although he won’t be the same usage-heavy player he once was, Samuel’s versatility in both receiving and running makes him a valuable addition. The team also has needs behind Christian McCaffrey, which could open up more opportunities for Samuel in the backfield. There is potential for Samuel to see increased involvement in rushing plays, which could boost his overall value. Fantasy players may have hoped for a less competitive receiving group, but Samuel’s return could still offer upside.
Samuel’s quiet free agency compared to other veterans like Stefon Diggs and Keenan Allen was notable. Despite not drawing much attention, he remains a threat to return to form and impact fantasy rankings.
