The British comedian faces seven rape and sexual assault charges involving six women as jurors hear testimony about alleged incidents spanning 1999 to 2009. Brand denies all charges.

British comedian and actor Russell Brand returned to Southwark Crown Court in London on Thursday, October 15, as jurors heard evidence from a woman who alleges he raped her at a Labour Party conference in 1999. The 51-year-old is standing trial on seven sexual offense charges involving six women over a decade.

Brand has pleaded not guilty to three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault. The alleged incidents occurred between 1999 and 2009, when he was building his career in television, radio, comedy and film.

Thursday’s proceedings focused on the first complainant, who described an alleged attack in a Bournemouth hotel room. The jury watched a prerecorded police interview in which she explained how she met Brand and why she waited more than two decades before reporting the incident.

Woman Describes Alleged Attack at 1999 Conference

The woman told police she met Brand during a cabaret performance at the 1999 Labour Party conference. She recalled initially feeling comfortable around him and agreeing to spend time with him in her hotel room.

According to her account, Brand began behaving strangely after they entered the room. She said he was partly undressed when she returned from the bathroom and described his movements as increasingly unsettling.

The woman alleged that Brand asked her to take photographs of him before the situation became frightening. She told investigators that he pushed her onto the bed, removed her clothing and raped her despite her lack of consent.

During her account, she described feeling shocked and uncertain about how to respond. She said she had initially believed she was safe with Brand but became afraid of his behavior.

The complainant also described the emotional effects of the alleged incident. She recalled feeling ashamed and blaming herself afterward, while worrying that she might have become pregnant.

She did not report the alleged assault to police at the time. Instead, she continued with her life while Brand became an increasingly recognizable entertainment figure.

The woman eventually contacted police in 2023 after watching a television documentary containing allegations of sexual misconduct against Brand. She explained that hearing other women describe their experiences prompted her to reconsider what had happened.

According to Reuters, she told investigators that she knew the encounter had been rape, despite having questioned her own response for years. The statement was presented as part of the prosecution’s evidence and remains an allegation that the jury must assess.

Prosecutors Outline Allegations Involving Six Women

Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC opened the case on Wednesday, October 14, describing Brand as a calculated and manipulative sexual predator. Those descriptions represent the prosecution’s allegations, which Brand disputes.

Karmy-Jones told jurors the six complainants did not know one another and had independently reported their allegations. She said they encountered Brand through professional work, entertainment events or social situations.

The prosecution outlined incidents involving women at television and radio workplaces, a London bar, a political conference and other locations.

One woman alleged that Brand grabbed her while she was working at MTV in 2001 and attempted to pull her into a toilet. Another accused him of sexually assaulting her at a Soho establishment in 2004.

A separate complainant alleged that Brand aggressively kissed and touched her without consent while she was working at Capital Radio around 2004 or 2005.

Another woman accused Brand of an alleged anal rape in 2009. Prosecutors also described a further allegation involving a woman connected to the television industry.

The charges concern separate incidents, and each allegation must be considered on its own evidence. The prosecution argues that the accounts demonstrate similarities in Brand’s alleged behavior toward women.

Brand’s legal team disputes the allegations. The defense will have an opportunity to challenge the prosecution’s evidence and present its own case as the trial proceeds.

Former Friend Gives Evidence About Brand’s Behavior

The first prosecution witness was Mark Pinheiro, a former friend who traveled with Brand to the 1999 Labour Party conference in Bournemouth.

Pinheiro told the court that Brand had discussed his sexual ambitions during their journey. According to testimony reported by ABC News Australia, Brand said he hoped to have slept with 5,000 women during his lifetime.

The witness also recalled a later conversation in which Brand allegedly mentioned a sexual encounter at the conference. Pinheiro said Brand suggested the situation had become heated and had gone further than expected.

Defense barrister Ian Winter KC challenged Pinheiro’s account during cross-examination, questioning inconsistencies in his recollections.

The significance and reliability of Pinheiro’s evidence will be matters for the jury to determine.

Brand Denies Nonconsensual Sexual Activity

Brand has consistently rejected the allegations against him. In written statements provided during the police investigation, he maintained that he had never engaged in nonconsensual sexual activity.

The prosecution told jurors that Brand did not answer police questions about the incidents but supplied written responses. In those statements, he reportedly said he could not remember several of the alleged encounters.

His defense has also questioned whether publicity surrounding previous allegations influenced the complainants’ memories.

Brand arrived at court accompanied by his wife, Laura Gallacher. Speaking to reporters outside the courthouse earlier in the proceedings, he acknowledged feeling concerned but expressed hope that the trial would produce a positive outcome for everyone involved.

Inside the courtroom, he listened while the prosecution presented its case.

The trial is being heard before Justice Joel Bennathan and a jury consisting of eight men and four women.

How the Investigation Began

Public allegations against Brand received widespread attention in September 2023 following a joint investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches.

The investigation included accounts from women alleging rape, sexual assault and other abusive behavior. Brand denied the allegations, and the Metropolitan Police subsequently began investigating complaints.

Formal criminal charges followed in April 2025, with additional charges announced later that year.

The judge has instructed jurors to distinguish the allegations raised in earlier media coverage from those being examined during the current trial. The documentary itself is not evidence that Brand committed the offenses before the court.

The six women involved in the criminal case are entitled to lifelong anonymity under British law protecting complainants in sexual offense cases. Their identities are not being disclosed in court reporting.

Brand’s case has attracted considerable public attention because of his lengthy entertainment career. He became known for his stand-up comedy and television presenting before moving into Hollywood films.

His screen appearances include Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek. In more recent years, he has established an online presence discussing politics, religion and cultural issues.

His public profile does not alter the legal standard governing the trial. Prosecutors must prove the charges beyond reasonable doubt, and Brand is presumed innocent unless a jury finds him guilty.

Trial Expected to Continue for Several Weeks

The proceedings are expected to last at least six weeks, although the schedule could change depending on witness testimony and legal arguments.

Jurors will hear further evidence concerning the six complainants and have opportunities to consider challenges raised by the defense.

The central questions concern whether the alleged incidents occurred and whether the prosecution can establish the offenses charged against Brand.

As testimony continues at Southwark Crown Court, Brand remains on bail and continues to deny all seven charges. No verdict has been reached.
