The British heavyweight champion overwhelms Wardley at London’s O2 Arena, forcing a second-round stoppage and setting up a possible title unification fight with IBF champion Filip Hrgovic.

Daniel Dubois retained his WBO heavyweight boxing title with a devastating second-round technical knockout of Fabio Wardley at The O2 Arena in London on Saturday, October 17, 2026. The British champion knocked Wardley down in the opening seconds and maintained relentless pressure until Wardley’s corner threw in the towel.

The fight ended at 2:21 of the second round, giving Dubois his second victory over Wardley in five months. Referee Steve Gray stopped the contest after Wardley’s team decided their fighter had absorbed enough punishment.

Dubois improved his professional record to 24 wins and three losses, while Wardley fell to 20 wins, two losses and one draw. The result strengthened Dubois’ position among the leading heavyweight contenders and opened the possibility of another world title unification fight.

Dubois Takes Control in the Opening Seconds

The rematch began at a pace that immediately put Wardley in trouble. Just 17 seconds after the opening bell, Dubois landed a powerful straight right hand that sent his challenger to the canvas.

Wardley managed to beat the referee’s count, but the knockdown established the pattern for the rest of the fight. Dubois advanced behind his jab and continued landing heavy punches whenever Wardley attempted to exchange.

The contrast with their first meeting was striking. In May, Wardley had knocked Dubois down twice during the early rounds before eventually losing his title. This time, Dubois took control before his opponent could establish any rhythm.

Wardley struggled to respond to the champion’s combinations, particularly when Dubois followed his jab with powerful right hands. The challenger repeatedly found himself retreating toward the ropes while trying to recover from the opening knockdown.

Late in the first round, Dubois trapped Wardley and unleashed another series of punches. Wardley remained standing despite taking several clean shots, but his trainer Ben Davison was preparing to intervene as the round approached its end.

The bell provided Wardley with a temporary escape and allowed him to return to his corner. However, the damage from the opening three minutes left him facing an immediate challenge when the second round began.

Dubois resumed his attack without hesitation. He forced Wardley backward, closed the distance and landed another succession of heavy punches as the challenger struggled to defend himself.

With Wardley trapped near the ropes and absorbing further punishment, his corner threw in the towel. Gray immediately waved off the contest, confirming Dubois as the winner by technical knockout.

The stoppage came after just four minutes and 21 seconds of fighting, a dramatic difference from their previous meeting, which lasted into the 11th round.

Dubois Reflects on His Dominant Performance

After the fight, Dubois said he had entered the ring determined to establish his authority immediately. The champion acknowledged Wardley’s willingness to return for another fight but emphasized that he had prepared to deliver a decisive performance.

Speaking to Reuters, Dubois described his approach with a brief statement: “I had my intentions, bad intentions, from the beginning.”

He also pointed to the difficulty of their first meeting, when he had been forced to recover from two knockdowns before winning. Saturday’s performance showed a different approach, with Dubois using controlled aggression to prevent Wardley from gaining momentum.

The 29-year-old champion appeared considerably more comfortable than he had during the early stages of their first contest. He attacked with confidence, maintained his balance and prevented Wardley from finding opportunities to counter.

Wardley, meanwhile, accepted the defeat without making excuses. The 31-year-old challenger praised Dubois and said he intended to learn from the experience before returning to competition.

The result marked Wardley’s second professional defeat, both coming against Dubois. His career had previously been defined by an unbeaten rise through the heavyweight division and several dramatic victories against established opponents.

A Dramatically Different Rematch

The two British heavyweights first met on May 9, 2026, at Co-op Live Arena in Manchester. Wardley entered that contest as WBO champion after being elevated to the full title in November 2025.

Their first fight produced a very different contest. Wardley knocked Dubois down twice during the opening three rounds, threatening to end the challenger’s championship ambitions before the bout had fully developed.

Dubois gradually recovered and began using his superior punching power to wear Wardley down. The fight became increasingly physical as both men exchanged heavy blows through the middle rounds.

By the 11th round, Wardley had suffered significant facial damage and was struggling to withstand Dubois’ pressure. Referee Howard Foster eventually stopped the fight, giving Dubois the WBO championship.

Wardley subsequently exercised his contractual rematch clause, securing another opportunity to regain the title. The second meeting was scheduled for October 17 at The O2, offering the former champion a chance to reverse the result.

However, Dubois prevented a repeat of their lengthy first encounter. His immediate knockdown and sustained attack left Wardley little opportunity to demonstrate the resilience that had carried him through difficult moments earlier in his career.

The result also represented another important victory for Dubois following his defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in July 2025. That loss had cost Dubois his IBF heavyweight championship, but his victories over Wardley restored him to the world title picture.

Filip Hrgovic Calls for Unification Fight

Attention quickly turned toward Dubois’ next opponent after Saturday’s stoppage. IBF heavyweight champion Filip Hrgovic was present at ringside and expressed interest in facing Dubois in a title unification contest.

Hrgovic suggested that the two fighters could meet in March 2027. Such a matchup would give Dubois the opportunity to pursue the IBF championship he previously held while defending his WBO belt.

The Croatian fighter has his own history with Dubois. They met in June 2024, when Dubois stopped Hrgovic in the eighth round to claim the interim IBF heavyweight title.

Dubois later became the full IBF champion before losing that championship to Usyk. A rematch with Hrgovic would therefore offer both fighters an opportunity to revisit their earlier rivalry with two world titles potentially at stake.

Hrgovic captured the IBF championship in August 2026 with a victory over British prospect Moses Itauma. His emergence as a possible opponent adds another significant matchup to a heavyweight division already featuring several prominent names.

Promoter Frank Warren cautioned that other potential opponents would also need consideration before a unification fight could be arranged. No official agreement or date for a Dubois-Hrgovic rematch has been announced.

Dubois made clear that regaining the IBF belt remains one of his ambitions. His victory over Wardley ensures that he can pursue that goal while continuing his reign as WBO champion.

Undercard Features Olympic Champion and Rising Prospects

Saturday’s boxing event also featured several notable contests before the heavyweight championship fight.

Two-time Olympic super-heavyweight gold medalist Bakhodir Jalolov defeated Britain’s Solomon Dacres by unanimous decision after 10 rounds. The Uzbek heavyweight demonstrated his technical ability and maintained his unbeaten professional record.

Irish heavyweight prospect Adam Olaniyan defeated Dan Garber by second-round technical knockout. Garber’s corner attempted to stop the contest as their fighter came under increasing pressure.

Michael Gomez Jr. and Louie O’Doherty fought to a majority draw in their lightweight contest. Two judges scored the bout 114-114, while the third favored Gomez 115-114.

Nelson Birchall also recorded a seventh-round technical knockout victory over Levi Giles, adding another stoppage to a card dominated by aggressive performances.

Heavyweight Division Faces Another Potential Title Fight

Dubois’ victory leaves him holding the WBO championship with two consecutive wins over the same opponent. It also gives him considerable momentum heading into discussions about his next title defense.

Wardley faces a different challenge after suffering another stoppage loss. Although he remains an established heavyweight contender, his immediate priority will be recovery before deciding when and against whom to return.

For Dubois, the difference between the two Wardley fights was particularly significant. He needed 11 rounds to secure the championship in May but required less than two rounds to defend it in October.

The possibility of facing Hrgovic now gives the WBO champion a clear opportunity to pursue a second major heavyweight belt. The proposed March 2027 fight remains unconfirmed, with negotiations and other championship obligations still to be addressed.
