2026 World Series Race: Brewers Near Pennant as Dodgers Face Elimination

Milwaukee holds a commanding 3-0 lead over Los Angeles in the National League Championship Series, while Cleveland and Tampa Bay are battling for control of the American League.

The race to the 2026 World Series has reached a critical stage, with four Major League Baseball teams competing for the final two places. The Milwaukee Brewers are one victory away from capturing the National League pennant, while the Los Angeles Dodgers face elimination. In the American League, the Cleveland Guardians and Tampa Bay Rays are locked in a much closer contest.

Milwaukee took a commanding 3-0 lead in the National League Championship Series with a 6-2 victory over Los Angeles on Wednesday, October 14. The result leaves the Brewers needing just one more win to reach the World Series for the first time since 1982.

The Dodgers, meanwhile, must win four consecutive games to keep their championship hopes alive. Los Angeles entered October seeking a third straight World Series title, a feat no Major League Baseball team has accomplished since the New York Yankees won three consecutive championships from 1998 through 2000.

Brewers Move Within One Victory of the World Series

Milwaukee has turned its rematch against Los Angeles into a surprisingly one-sided series. The Brewers lost all four games to the Dodgers in last year’s National League Championship Series, but this October has produced a dramatic reversal.

After winning the opening game 2-1, Milwaukee defeated Los Angeles 7-4 in Game 2. The Brewers then traveled to Dodger Stadium and delivered another victory, putting the defending champions on the brink of elimination.

Wednesday’s game demonstrated Milwaukee’s ability to capitalize on opportunities. Jackson Chourio opened the scoring with a home run on the first pitch of the game, giving the visitors an immediate advantage.

The Dodgers briefly recovered when catcher Will Smith delivered a two-run double in the sixth inning. The hit gave Los Angeles a 2-1 lead and offered the home crowd renewed hope.

That advantage disappeared in the seventh inning. Jake Bauers battled Dodgers pitcher Blake Snell through an 11-pitch at-bat before hitting a two-run home run that put Milwaukee ahead 3-2.

Garrett Mitchell followed with another home run, extending the lead. The Brewers added two more runs before the game ended, completing a 6-2 victory.

Rookie pitcher Robert Gasser also played an important role, working five scoreless innings against the Dodgers. Milwaukee’s relief pitchers maintained control after Los Angeles briefly took the lead.

According to Reuters, the victory placed Milwaukee within one win of ending a 44-year absence from the World Series. The Brewers have never won a World Series championship.

Their only previous appearance came in 1982, when the franchise represented the American League and lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games. Milwaukee moved to the National League in 1998.

A return to the championship series would therefore carry considerable significance for the franchise and its supporters.

Dodgers Face a Historic Comeback Challenge

Los Angeles entered the postseason with another talented and expensive roster, but its offense has struggled to produce consistently against Milwaukee.

Shohei Ohtani, one of baseball’s most recognizable players, has had a difficult postseason at the plate. Injuries have also complicated his season, and manager Dave Roberts has adjusted the batting order in an effort to generate more offense.

The Dodgers moved Ohtani to sixth in the batting order for Game 3. The change did not produce the offensive turnaround Los Angeles needed.

Wednesday’s defeat left the Dodgers with only five hits. Their inability to sustain rallies has allowed Milwaukee to control the series despite several competitive stretches.

The challenge facing Los Angeles is considerable. Only one team in Major League Baseball history has recovered from a 3-0 deficit in a best-of-seven postseason series.

The Boston Red Sox accomplished that in the 2004 American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees. Boston went on to win the World Series that year, ending an 86-year championship drought.

The Dodgers must now attempt the same kind of recovery against a Milwaukee team that has already won three consecutive games.

Tyler Glasnow is scheduled to start Game 4 for Los Angeles on Thursday. The Dodgers need an effective performance from their starting pitcher and considerably more production from the lineup to extend the series.

Even one victory would only begin the comeback. Los Angeles would still need three more consecutive wins to advance.

Guardians and Rays Battle for the American League Pennant

While Milwaukee has established a commanding National League advantage, the American League Championship Series remains competitive.

Cleveland and Tampa Bay split the first two games of their best-of-seven matchup, leaving the series tied 1-1 entering Game 3 on Thursday.

The Guardians won the opener 7-3 on October 12. Tampa Bay responded the following day with a 3-1 victory, preventing Cleveland from taking an early two-game advantage.

The Rays benefited from an outstanding pitching performance by Freddy Peralta in Game 2. He worked six scoreless innings, allowing four hits while striking out six batters.

Tampa Bay also took advantage of a defensive mistake by Cleveland. Liam Hicks delivered a two-run single during a three-run fourth inning that provided the decisive offense.

Cleveland managed its only run in the seventh inning but could not complete a comeback.

The series now moves to Progressive Field in Cleveland, where the Guardians are scheduled to host three consecutive games.

Gavin Williams is scheduled to start Game 3 for Cleveland, while Tampa Bay counters with Griffin Jax. Williams enters the matchup after recording 24 strikeouts in 11 2/3 postseason innings.

The game was moved to an earlier starting time because of approaching severe weather. Major League Baseball rescheduled the contest for 1 p.m. Eastern on Thursday, rather than its originally planned evening start.

Unlike the National League matchup, neither American League team has established control of the series. With the teams tied entering Thursday, both remain three victories away from the World Series.

Two American League Teams Seeking a Long-Awaited Championship

The American League matchup features two organizations with substantial postseason ambitions and lengthy championship droughts.

Cleveland last won the World Series in 1948, when the franchise was known as the Indians. The team has reached the World Series several times since, including appearances in 1995, 1997 and 2016, but has not captured another championship.

Tampa Bay has never won the World Series. The Rays reached the championship series in 2008 and 2020, losing to the Philadelphia Phillies and Dodgers, respectively.

A pennant for either team would create another opportunity to end those disappointments.

Cleveland has relied on its pitching and a lineup featuring longtime star José Ramírez. Tampa Bay has combined effective pitching with timely hitting to remain competitive throughout October.

Both clubs also represent a different financial model from the Dodgers, whose large payroll and collection of established stars have made Los Angeles one of baseball’s most prominent franchises.

The American League winner will face either Milwaukee or Los Angeles in the World Series.

World Series Scheduled to Begin October 23

Major League Baseball has scheduled Game 1 of the 2026 World Series for Friday, October 23. The championship will be played as a best-of-seven series, with the first team to win four games receiving the Commissioner’s Trophy.

The remaining league championship games will determine which clubs advance.

For Milwaukee, the immediate objective is straightforward. One more victory over Los Angeles would secure the National League pennant and send the Brewers to their first World Series in 44 years.

The Dodgers face a completely different situation. Their championship defense will end with another loss, leaving them to pursue one of the most difficult comebacks in baseball history.

Cleveland and Tampa Bay still have a more balanced contest ahead. Their series could extend through October 20 if all seven games are necessary.

The next several days will determine whether the World Series features a long-awaited championship opportunity for smaller-market franchises or another chance for Los Angeles to extend its recent dominance of Major League Baseball.
