El-Sayed Faces Backlash Over Piker Comments and Israel Stance

Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed is facing criticism after his ally Hasan Piker made inflammatory remarks about Jewish communities and Israel. Piker appeared on a Twitch livestream in late August where he criticized Jeremy Moss, a Jewish Democratic candidate for Congress in Michigan. During the stream, Piker displayed a social media post that featured Moss and made comments suggesting Moss was overly tied to Israel. Piker said people were no longer willing to tolerate what he described as a Jewish identity tied too closely to the state of Israel. He added that this approach would eventually lead to violence against American Jews rather than just against Israel.

Piker’s comments sparked immediate backlash from Jewish leaders and Democratic officials, according to CBS News. Several Democrats condemned the remarks as dangerous and lacking substance, according to a report from clevelandjewishnews.com. Michigan Representative Haley Stevens, who lost her primary to El-Sayed, said Piker was a person who thrives on hate and shock tactics.

Moss responded by saying he would not accept lectures from a California podcaster about what the Jewish community in his district believes. El-Sayed has been under scrutiny for his own positions on Israel and his relationship with Piker, Politico reported. His campaign has struggled to unite Michigan Democrats after a primary marked by accusations of antisemitism.

The controversy comes as AIPAC spent $30 million in the race, a record for the group. El-Sayed’s campaign has also faced criticism for his response to an attack on a Michigan synagogue in March.

He has taken strong positions opposing all military aid to Israel, which has drawn criticism from Jewish Democrats. Despite the backlash, Piker said his comments wouldn’t change his support for El-Sayed.

El-Sayed’s political team has tried to distance themselves from Piker’s remarks while maintaining their alliance. Several Jewish Democratic leaders have expressed concern about how El-Sayed’s political positioning affects the broader Democratic coalition in Michigan.

The situation has become a focal point in the race as Democrats seek to balance their support for Israel with broader concerns about antisemitism. El-Sayed is scheduled to host a town hall in Oakland County, a heavily Jewish area, ahead of the election.

Haley Stevens, who lost her primary to El-Sayed, endorsed him after his victory in the race. The controversy continues to shape how Jewish voters view El-Sayed and his campaign strategy.

It also raises questions about the role of progressive voices like Piker in shaping Democratic messaging around Israel. As the race moves forward, El-Sayed’s team is working to manage the fallout from these comments while defending his broader platform.

The situation underscores the challenges facing Democrats in balancing support for Israel with concerns about antisemitism. El-Sayed’s campaign has not yet issued a formal statement addressing the specific comments made by Piker.

However, his team continues to emphasize their commitment to Jewish safety and inclusion in the Democratic Party. The debate over how to respond to Piker’s remarks is likely to continue as the election nears.

It remains unclear whether El-Sayed will distance himself further from Piker or maintain his support for him.
