Dr Oz Appears On Show Looking 90 Years Old

January 27th, 2010

Digital News Report -  Dr. Oz stunned his audience today when he walked out on the stage looking 90 years old.  He did this stunt to get people thinking about what they need to do to age gracefully.

Oz said that 1,000 years ago you were “old” if you lived to the age of 24.  Just 100 years ago you were old if you lived to 50.  Today you can expect to live into your 80s.  The miracle of modern medicine accounts for this change.

Lifestyle changes, including calorie restriction, can extend your life.  Animal studies at the University of Wisconsin provide some evidence for that.  Half of all Americans exercise on a regular basis.

There are some things you can do age gracefully.  Ultimately it is about what is happening inside of you on the cellular level.

As your cells divide, we lose telomeres on the end of the chromosomes.  So how can you keep your telomeres from shortening?

1)     Keep up your strength through weight lifting, perhaps twice a week.

The doctor said you should be able to do a certain number of push-ups.

Age Push Ups
30 13
40 11
50 7
60 5

2)     Do aerobic exercise.  You have to break a sweat 3 times a week.

3)     Eat less and eat right

Mike Roizen said his passion is helping people get healthy every day.  Roizen is 64 but looks 45.  Dr. Roizen said he eats right, exercises and sleeps well.  He looks for colorful vegetables that contain carotenoids (organic pigments).  He showed the audience apples, grapes and cranberries.

Roizen said you don’t have to eat 30 percent less food to benefit from calorie restriction.  Just eat 300 calories less each day.  Also, resveratrol may give you the benefits of caloric restriction.  The final studies on resveratrol are being carried out right now.

Finally Oz said you have stay in touch with the people you love.  “It gives you a reason to keep your heart beating.”
