Digital News Report – With all of the bad news coming out of the country of Haiti, there is some good news. The 7.0 earthquake struck the island of Hispaniola earlier this week and rescue workers have been diligently trying to save lives.
There are reports that Haitian police are now protecting locations and directing traffic in the city of Port-au-Prince. First reported by CNN, this change of events is important.
Many of the local police were victims of the earthquake too. These officials needed to get their own family to safety before they could continue their work.
U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, arrived in Haiti Saturday. Clinton met with local officials including Haitian President Rene Preval. They met in a tent at the airport because the Presidential Palace was destroyed in the quake.
Any good news is flanked by bad news. The UK Globe and Mail reports that the devastated infrastructure in Haiti could lead to disease outbreaks including “a wave of dysentery and cholera”.
This same fear of disease was reported after the Asian tsunami in 2004 when experts said an additional 50,000 could die. But the infrastructure was not destroyed like it is in Haiti.
