Movie Review: 9

September 9th, 2009

The Man vs. Machine plot has been used for decades, but 9 starts from a point in the war where few films venture.  When the film starts humans have already been eliminated and all that is left are a mad scientists dolls (know as “stitchpunks” by the shows creators) that mysteriously possess the gift of life.  With the human element absent for most of the film (a few brief flashbacks assure the audience that this is, indeed, a version of our world), the film can flex its stylistic muscles to the extreme, which is clearly the movies strong point.

If you are expecting a deep and meaningful plot, you are looking at the wrong film.  The plot isn’t bad, but it’s basic and simple.  The animation and design concepts make up for the weakened plot.  The film is simply beautiful.  I was left breathless by the imagery from the moment the film began right until the credits began to roll.  The film takes the Steampunk concept to a whole new level.

At only 72 minutes running time and a truncated plot, the film seemed to go way too fast.  Most films these days tend to last two or three hours, which even with the most engaging plot, can drag on way too long.  I didn’t look at my watch once during 9 and was actually hoping for more.  But please, don’t take that as a sign that a sequel should be made.  In the era of sequels and remakes, this film was a breath of fresh air and it should stay that way.  However, I’d love to see more concepts from Shane Acker. The original short film took Acker four and a half years to create and won awards at numerous film festivals across the country.  I’m eager to see what his future holds.

The film is the second animation from Focus Features.  Like Coraline, the film is clearly not meant for children, despite being in the animation genre.  However, while Coraline seemed colorful and fanciful, leading one to believe it may be suitable for kids, one only has to view the poster to tell that 9 is a gritty post apocalyptic adventure.  I recommend this film for all adults who appreciate aesthetically pleasing films.  You will not be disappointed.
